Being New Age and Nubile: Undertaking a Holistic Assessment of Your Company
There is a lot of talk about the “holistic” method of running a business. This is very important in the modern world. The nature of how we, as people, are seemingly more swept under by anxieties, depression, and the increased use of social media has resulted in FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out. Our employees are much more on a knife edge than a long time ago. Businesses strive to make cuts, and this is an essential move to make progression. Being holistic means to undertake an evaluation of the company as a whole, the definition of holistic is “characterized by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.” So everything is linked. Where do we begin to make this assessment?

Looking at what our staff can achieve is the most important thing in expanding our business. It has been too easy in the past to slap targets on temp staff members and to kick them out if they are not doing above and beyond what you are asking of them. That is the common factory line approach, it causes inconsistency and it ultimately causes a confusing ethos to the outsider looking in. By putting the onus back onto our staff members, we are putting trust in them to communicate their feelings, good and bad, about how the company can improve. After all, to get an understanding of how someone does a specific job you go to the source. By getting them to give honest feedback about their whole process, and why it is wasting more of their time, you can begin to implement the appropriate strategies.

Looking at our equipment and technology is another approach to take. By understanding what our paper trail looks like a standard working day, we can look at the processes involved in how many steps can be eradicated to increase productivity. Even the aspect of the physical paper trail, we can outsource smartly to companies like Ricoh Printer Support who will take a view of your entire output in terms of printing (which, in a standard office environment, is likely to be a lot!) and data usage and can work with your business to find the best methods to streamline. Technology is such a constantly changing area, that it can be difficult to keep up with the times. As systems and servers are now going for the Cloud-based approach to data storage, does this mean that your common physical server is being made redundant? Cloud servers are able to store more data than is standard now, which is making it a no-brainer to an online business, so if your company is making massive progressions, it is something to think about.

Taking a holistic approach to business means the polar opposite of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Understanding what an asset every single cog in the wheel is to the company should be how you undertake an assessment, and should continue to do long into the future.
